What is the organization with which my student will be serving? Florida Baptist Collegiate Ministries is a ministry of the Florida Baptist Convention (FBC). The FBC is a cooperative organization of Southern Baptist Churches in Florida. According to the mission statement, “The Mission of the Florida Baptist Convention is to inspire and to equip – through word and deed – Florida Baptist churches and associations to accomplish the Great Commission.” Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) is one of the ministries supported by the Cooperative Program of the FBC. BCM Student Mission’s exists to empower students to pray, prepare, give, go and mobilize others for God’s mission to redeem a lost world. The student mission’s program of BCM began in 1948. That year, one student was sent in the summer to conduct Vacation Bible School. Since that beginning, thousands of students have been sent around the world as summer and semester missionaries. Furthermore, students throughout Florida have raised several million dollars to support their peers who have served as missionaries.
How are students chosen to serve through Baptist Collegiate Missions? Students apply and are interviewed by their local BCM director or church college minister. Students are appointed based on information gathered from the application, references and the personal interview process.
How are Baptist Student Missionaries supported financially? The unique aspect of the Baptist Student Mission's program is that students support students. The largest portion of money comes from students who work all year long on their local campus to raise the necessary funds to help scholarship each missionary from Florida. Students serving less than one month will receive $300 scholarships. Students serving more than one month will receive $500 scholarships. Students will also have their supplemental insurance provided through the mission’s fund.
What about a stipend? Students applying to the North American Mission Board which includes the Florida positions will receive from NAMB a $75 per week stipend. Students serving internationally receive no stipend.
What about insurance for my student while on the field? The North American Mission Board provides a supplemental accident insurance policy for those students serving in the United States and Canada. This policy is to provide each student with supplemental insurance to their primary insurance company. This is basically an accident policy that would cover costs secondary to your primary policy. The maximum benefits are $5000. Insurance for those serving in international mission and short-term projects is provided through the Collegiate Ministries Department with the premium costs being paid for by the student mission’s fund. The coverage provides a basic level of Personal Accident Protection, Permanent Total Disability and Property Insurance and is not intended to replace any personal insurance that you may currently have. For more information, visit http://thetask.org/students/Approved/INSURANCEBENEFITS.doc .
What are Mission’s Support Partners? Every student who serves as a Baptist Student Missionary is asked to enlist at least five (5) mission’s support partners. These partners agree to support their student through prayer, encouragement, and/or financial support.
Who will supervise the students? Students who serve in the United States and Canada will work under the supervision of church staff personnel or a North American Mission Board missionary depending on the assignment. Students who serve overseas will work with International Mission Board Missionaries.
What if there is a family crisis or some other problem while my student is on the field? The entire BCM, NAMB and IMB staffs are available to you at any time throughout the summer. If for some reason there is an emergency at home or on the field, we are always able to communicate with the students and will do whatever is necessary in that particular situation. Contact numbers are as follows: BCM, Florida Baptist Convention – 1.800.226.8584, ext. 3092 NAMB, Student Mobilization – 1.800-462-8657, ext. 6485 IMB, Student Mobilization – 1.800.999.3113, ext. 1342
May I visit my student while they are serving on the field? We appreciate your support and your interest in your student’s ministry. If you must see your students during the summer, the student must receive approval from his/her supervisor. It is important that visits not interfere with the ministry. Also, we ask that you or your student contact the Collegiate Ministries Department to let us know of your visit.
What if I have other questions? The BCM staff is available to answer questions and assist you in any way that we can. Please contact us at 1.800.226.8584, extension 3092 or bcm@flbaptist.org .
